Roster clock: 16 guaranteed, one cut or trade before Oct. 21
NY Post’s Khobi Price (Sept. 21) reframes the camp deadline: when L.A. signed Matisse Thybulle to a one-year, $3.3M veteran minimum in late July, the Lakers hit 16 players on guaranteed standard NBA contracts—one over the regular-season 15 limit.
Price ranks three paths before Opening Night (Oct. 21):
- Player-for-pick — “If this option was available… they would’ve already pulled the trigger.” Names most often in play: Jaden Hardy, Dalton Knecht, Jarred Vanderbilt. A standalone second-rounder for any of them is unlikely; Vanderbilt is owed about $12.4M this season with a $13.3M player option for 2027-28.
- Consolidation (likeliest trade) — a 2-for-1 involving two of Hardy, Knecht, and/or Vanderbilt with a team that has an open roster spot and an expiring contract. May or may not return a second-round pick; either way it gets L.A. to 15 while protecting future flexibility.
- Waive an expiring (Hardy or Knecht) — gets to 15 but eats dead money for the rest of the season; the deadline to waive-and-stretch current-season salary already passed.
Heavy (Adel Ahmad, Sept. 22) amplifies the same Price framework and flags the still-thin backup-center shelf behind Walker Kessler (Kevon Looney as the only true center depth). Treat trade scenarios as reporting/analysis, not completed deals.

Fifth starter: anonymous WC coach points at Ziaire Williams
Heavy’s Sean Deveney (updated Sept. 21) quotes a Western Conference assistant on L.A.’s open power-forward starter: “Probably Ziaire Williams. He’s not perfect, he’s not even a starter in this league at any position, but look at their options. He is the best of the worst.”
Deveney’s frame: Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves, Quentin Grimes, and Walker Kessler look locked; the 4 is the hole. Candidates he stacks against Williams: Jarred Vanderbilt, Jake LaRavia, and Sandro Mamukelashvili (on a four-year, $52M deal that many assumed meant a starting role). On Buha’s Block, analyst Nate Duncan also leaned Williams for skillset—while noting PF-guarding concerns with a thin frame (listed ~6'9" / 185).
LakersWire (Robert Marvi, Sept. 22) relays the same Deveney quote and notes Williams’s one-year, $2.45M deal, ~10.1 PPG in 23.7 MPG over his last two Brooklyn seasons, and a modest 34.3% from three last year. Luka: CA prep window open; media day in six days
Sportklub (via NY Post / BasketNews / Hoops Wire) had Dončić expected to leave Slovenia for Los Angeles around Sept. 20. Eurohoops (Sept. 21) follows the emotional Instagram goodbye to daughters Gabriela and Olivia—“No matter where in the world your Dad is…”—and frames him as heading back to California after the longest break of his career (200+ days after the Grade 2 left hamstring that ended 2025-26). Treat European rehab/weight notes and “healthy for camp” language as reporting, not a Lakers medical release.
